Eventdescription

Sept 23-25, 2019  |  Designing and Executing Qualitative Data Collection Projects

Do you want to deepen your understanding of the qualitative principles that inform project design and execution? Expand your knowledge of qualitative data collection techniques? Hone skills in coding and analysis?

Participants of this 2.5-day training will engage the life cycle of a qualitative study, from early brainstorming to final products, with attention to qualitative principles that shape each step and invite insights into the lives of participants. Those attending this course will become more confident in making decisions regarding qualitative design, data collection processes, and strategies for analysis and presentation.

WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS:

Qualitative mentors/facilitators are Alison Hamilton, PhD, MPH and Raymond C. Maietta, PhD from ResearchTalk, Inc. This workshop is designed to benefit professional research staff, research teams and individual researchers and is appropriate for new and continuing learners. Discussion topics will include:

  • Rationale for using qualitative methods: Why are qualitative methods necessary to address a particular research question(s)?

  • Study design: How does the design of a qualitative research project work to align study goals with effective data collection and preliminary strategies for analysis?

  • Data collection: How data collection methods can address research question(s), get closer to participants’ experiences, and drive data analysis?

  • Data analysis: What does it mean to “stay close to the data?” Why does it matter?

  • Study products: Pre-identifying intended study products and determining how to “get there” from data collection and analysis

SESSION SCHEDULE:

  • Day 1:  9:30am – 3:30pm (1-hour lunch break)

  • Session #1, 9:30am-12pm: Overview of principles and strategies for designing and executing qualitative projects
  • Session #2, 1-3:30pm: Preparing for data collection and fieldwork for qualitative projects
  • Day 2: 9:30am – 3:30pm  (1-hour lunch break)

  • Session #3, 9:30am-12pm: Practices, tips and strategies for qualitative and mixed methods data collection and fieldwork
  • Session #4, 1-3:30pm: Early phases of qualitative data analysis
  • Day 3: 9am – 11:30am

  • Session #5, 9:00am-11:30am: Moving toward presentation in qualitative projects

Each of the above five (5) sessions is organized as a standalone half-day offering, consisting of two 70-minute sessions. Participants can register for one, all five, or any combination.
